Coursera traga a edX

Cuando el MIT y la Universidad de Harvard comenzaron edX hace casi una década, se promocionó como una alternativa sin fines de lucro a los proveedores de cursos en línea con fines de lucro. A fines del mes pasado, las universidades anunciaron que están vendiendo edX a uno de esos proveedores con fines de lucro por 800 millones de dólares.

edX se había quedado atrás de rivales como Coursera, una plataforma similar fundada por profesores de la Universidad de Stanford, en recaudación de fondos y alcance, aunque todavía cuenta con 35 millones de usuarios y más de 3.000 cursos.

Los líderes de edX citaron la pandemia como un factor que llevó a la venta. "COVID impulsó una explosión en el aprendizaje remoto, que estimuló enormes inversiones en los competidores comerciales de edX", escribió el presidente del MIT, L. Rafael Reif, en una carta abierta. “Esto puso a edX, como organización sin fines de lucro, en una desventaja financiera. Este nuevo camino reconoce esta realidad y ofrece una solución que permite a edX continuar apoyando y manteniendo los aspectos clave de su misión”.

The capacity for people to learn and grow is nearly limitless. The human body can adapt to harsh environments, and the brain can learn, adapt, and reimagine a world of infinite possibilities. Despite these capabilities, students are underutilizing one of their most basic capacities: the ability to learn. Many students are failing to learn because the field of education needs to rethink how students learn. This isn’t to say educators failed. The Effects of Accelerated College Credit Programs on Educational Attainment

 This study examined participation in accelerated college credit programs dual enrollment, concurrent enrollment, and Advanced Placement courses in Rhode Island high schools to understand their effects on educational attainment in the 2013/14 grade 9 cohort. The state, which has funded and promoted these opportunities for students to earn college credit during high school over the past five years, sought evidence of the programs' effects on participants' high school graduation rates, postsecondary enrollment rates, and enrollment rates in developmental education courses in college. The study found that male, economically disadvantaged, and racial/ethnic minority students were underrepresented in accelerated college credit programs. Participation in these programs had positive effects on students' rates of high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment. Among students in the cohort who enrolled in Rhode Island public colleges, participation was associated with lower rates of developmental education course enrollment in the first year of college. The effects of participating in an accelerated college credit program were similar for economically disadvantaged students and for their peers.
